External stone cladding must suit the substrate, exposure, support or fixing method and surrounding details. Capture wall construction, dimensions, corners, openings and top edges before selecting a visual style.

Identify the wall and the proposed system
Photograph the whole elevation and record what is known about the substrate. Hand-set stone, precast stone-faced units and mechanically fixed rainscreen systems are distinct approaches; the correct design depends on the project.

Resolve the terminations
Corners, cills, copings, thresholds, parapets and interfaces with render or paving often determine whether the finished work looks deliberate and manages water appropriately.

Stone Federation GB identifies BS 8298 as the suite of standards covering the design and installation of natural stone cladding and lining. Ask the relevant designer, supplier and installer to define responsibilities and the system appropriate to the project.

Is stone cladding the same as a stone wall?
No. Cladding is a finish or envelope system supported by another construction; masonry walling may itself form the wall. Their design, support and detailing differ.
Can cladding be selected from a photograph?
A photograph can establish visual direction, but product, thickness, support, fixings, substrate, exposure and details require project-specific specification.
Does external cladding need planning permission?
It depends on the property, location and extent of work. Permitted-development rights can be restricted, and listed buildings or designated areas need particular care. Check with the relevant local planning authority before committing.
