Safe, convincing steps depend on the total level change, consistent geometry, landings, edges, drainage and connection to adjacent paths or patios. A close-up of a preferred stone is not enough to price the work.

Record the whole level change
Photograph the route from the side and front, include a scale where safe, and note doors, gates, walls and drainage. An installer needs to understand where the flight begins and ends.

Coordinate treads, risers and paving
Decide whether steps should blend with the patio or act as a contrasting feature. Unit sizes, nosings, riser material, joints and edge details should be drawn together before cutting begins.

Repair or rebuild is a site decision
Loose units may be a symptom of failed bedding, movement or water. Describe when the problem appeared and whether the geometry or underlying structure also needs correction.
