Crazy paving works when stone pieces are selected and fitted as a composition, not scattered into oversized joints. Material thickness, junctions, curves and drainage need as much planning as a regular slab grid.

Agree the character of the finished layout
Define acceptable piece sizes, joint-width range, colour mix and how triangular slivers will be avoided. A trial panel can make expectations clearer before the main area is committed.

Allow for fitting and cutting time
Irregular work can require more selection, trimming and dry arrangement than a repeating format. Access and a practical cutting area belong in the programme and quote.

Keep water out of accidental hollows
A varied pattern must still form controlled falls. Local low points, very wide joints and poorly supported small pieces are avoidable detailing problems, not part of the style.

Is crazy paving made from broken slabs?
It can use irregular new or reclaimed stone, but the pieces still need suitable thickness, condition and deliberate fitting. Random waste is not automatically a durable paving system.
Can crazy paving suit a modern garden?
Yes, when the stone palette, joint colour, piece scale and boundary geometry are restrained. It need not look rustic.
Why do joint widths matter?
Very wide or inconsistent joints can dominate the appearance and complicate support and maintenance. Agree a realistic range for the selected pieces and layout.
