Patio drainage and levels
Decide where the rain will go before deciding where the paving will finish.
Every hard surface changes how water moves. Record existing ponding, slopes, thresholds, channels, downpipes and permeable garden areas so drainage can be designed with the patio instead of added after it.

01
Read the existing water route
Visit the area during or after rain if it is safe. Photograph ponding and note whether runoff moves toward the house, a neighbour, a lawn, a drain or a retaining edge.

02
Falls are part of the visual design
The layout should accommodate controlled falls without awkward cuts, abrupt ramps or low points. Large formats, multiple thresholds and curved boundaries make early setting-out especially important.
03
Front gardens have specific planning rules
Government guidance says a new or replacement front-garden hard surface can remain permitted development where it is permeable or directs water to a permeable area within the property. Traditional impermeable front-garden surfacing over five square metres may require planning permission. Confirm the current position for the property and proposal with the local planning authority.

Common questions
Before requesting an estimate.
Can patio water discharge onto the pavement or next door?
The design should not simply transfer runoff to neighbouring land or the highway. Identify a suitable route within the project and obtain any necessary drainage or planning advice.
Will a channel drain solve every threshold problem?
No. Channels need correct levels, capacity, outlets and maintenance, and the surrounding building details still matter. They are one component of a drainage design.
Is permeable paving the same as paving that slopes to a lawn?
They are different approaches. A permeable construction allows water through the paved system; an impermeable surface may instead direct runoff to a suitable permeable area. The site determines what is appropriate.
